Balabac: The Philippines’ Best Kept Secret

Have you heard of Balabac?

Neither did I a year ago.
Surprisingly, it has never left my mind since.

If you are looking for the best beach experience within your budget that is way cheaper than Maldives, THIS IS DEFINITELY THE TRIP FOR YOU.

Little did I know how this trip will change me.

It started with a plane ride to Puerto Princesa and together with three other friends, we rode a van to the south of Palawan for six grueling hours. To be honest, I was terrified when the radio started playing songs from a local Malaysian radio station.

It only meant we were far long from the main court of the Philippines. The road trip was tedious and exhausting, but it was also filled with picturesque mountain ranges and a small glimpse of the ocean in between.

When we finally arrived at the jump-off point in Buliluyan Port, I was ecstatic to finally see the entirety of Balabac Island.

I changed from my comfy commuter clothes to my swimwear with the hope of plunging into the ocean water real soon.

Little did I know, were still a few hours away from the main island.

After 45 minutes of boat trip, we reached the first island, which was Tangkahan Island.

It was beautiful for an appetizer (if you know what I mean).

We were told that it was only just the beginning! Not wanting to disappoint ourselves on what is yet to come, we were happy and contented on the first island.

Then there after that, we were just blown away from one island to another!

And saving the best for last, Onuk Island

I was never good at math, but I can say the turquoise waters was surely four times of one football field.

No kidding,
Cross my heart,
And just like that, you can honestly say that this place is a piece of heaven.

Unsoiled.
Unstained.
Pristine waters everywhere.

If you get a chance to to visit Balabac, DON’T hesitate. Although the trip was back-breaking and that safety remains a bit of an issue,  I would still unquestionably jump into that boat and go back to that paradise.

Otherwise, if you are already signed up for it, please do bring your A-game, tons of energy, infinite patience and the willingness to embrace the unfamiliar.

Without a doubt, you are up to find a substantial love for nature, and upon stumbling to the kind of experience the island offers, you are bound to tell the tales of your adventure to your friends, family and even to your future grandchildren, inspiring them to see the hidden treasures of the Philippines.

Balabac will forever have a place in your heart, as it had in mine.

Sincerely yours,

Arra of Amigo Travels
